“Keep your legs closed”

A few weeks ago, I read a quote by Freiss “You know, back in my days, they used Bayer aspirin for contraception. The gals put it between their knees, and it wasn’t that costly,” which is essentially him saying “Keep your legs closed, ‘girls’.” We’re women.

Whose fault is pregnancy when a female and male both choose to have sex?

Is it both? Doesn’t it depend on the situation and all the choices that are made? When men tell the story that women are to blame for pregnancy, I wonder about their thought process.

Are men so out-of-control? Are men weak? Do men have choice?

Maybe if men keeping their legs closed would help, we wouldn’t have this sexist quote. Women make choices, true. Good for us! Men make choices, too. So tell me, if a man wants to abstain from sex, where does he put his aspirin on his own body?

My body? That’s under my own jurisdiction, no one else’s.

I’m feeling good about knowing what my choices are. What choices do you have?

As a man, here are some possibilities….

  • not have sex until you’re ready for the responsibilities that come with it (money for contraception, money for raising a child, money/time/choice to get tested for STDs, emotional responsibility to yourself to say “This is what I need” to your partner)
  • only have sex with a woman you trust, who has told you she’s not aiming to get pregnant
  • always wear a condom that you bought and were the only one to handle (hey, if you insist on having sex with a woman you don’t know or trust, don’t even give her a chance to poke holes in your condom)

  • use a form of birth control that you have control over (pill that you take every day reliably, IUD)
